Video abstract: good vs. bad

If you are aware of the gradual change in abstract expression in journal publication, you can remember different types such as text-based abstract, graphical abstract and video abstract. Aren’t you curious why the publishers are enforcing those changes or what’s the point of doing the same thing in a different way or rather a colorful way? Carrying out a research successfully is the major accomplishment to most of the researchers. But as far as the publication of the research is concerned, this is the most excruciating part to many. The ecstatic moment of successful completion of a research takes a bitter bite when a rejection comes due to a poorly constructed abstract or flunking with the grammar rules or poor image quality. This might sound absurd to the researchers and scientists but a significant number of publishers try to prioritize the fact that letting the rest of the world know about your research is not as same as knowing it by yourself.

Content:

When talking about the content in a video abstract, the script writing is the Holy Grail. This is because a script writing is not just copying and pasting a text abstract. Script writing for a video abstract is like answering the key questions in a creative format with a proper tone enforced to welcome your audience for further perusal. If you are disqualified in script writing, it’s better to admit that you will jeopardize the video abstract production.

In abstract sense, the good is a good content or script writing and the bad is screwing it up.

Hitting the target points:

This is no joke but this is very true that everybody is busy with their own research. First impression matters, period. If somebody finds your title matching with what she or he is looking for, would probably click to play your video abstract. If you start with something off-the topic, you might lose your viewer. Nobody would be interested to learn last 10 years of literature review if your topic is covering a fresh research. An example could be a diabetes study conducted based on a specific diet vs. general diet or a male vs female etc. But if the diabetes study is conducted exclusively on pregnant women, then your target group becomes only women and more precisely pregnant women. If it is a botany research and you want to cover a wide range of audience from general public (without any formal schooling), high school students, graduate students, to research scholars, you should build up your tone of the explanation gradually.

So, a video abstract will be a good one if the focus group and audience size is determined before the production.

Visual story-telling:

If the video abstract looks like some slideshows full of texts, then it’s obviously not a video abstract. Use of still images, small video clips, a little bit of animation, texts at suitable place makes it look like a story being said. Ideas should be vividly expressed. The audio should depict the infographic or images. If the value of ‘x’ and ‘y’ changes, how the value of ‘z’ changes at different time points in the graph. This helps also understand how you interpreted the data for your study. If you are being creative, there is no limit to decorate your explanation in 3D format with the aid of any audio. But make sure that the story-telling gets interesting because stroking some random pictures with drumbeat music might make it rather irritating.

A good story-telling is vital to have your viewers engaged in your video.

Fun and engaging:

Nobody likes to listen to a boring lecture. The topic of interest should be presented in a funny and engaging way. A good video abstract should have this trait as a must.

Video quality, voice over, image quality, text font and format use are also equally important and failure to do that might end up in a complete fiasco.
